What did the First Batch START? (green text inside)

FACT: at the bottom of Skim, under Cold Storage, is the First Batch. The game says it is “The one that started all of this.”

FACT: nobody says what "this" is... or do they...?

FACT: the codex now says it was the first SPILL. From the machines on the wall. Ask yourself: a spill from WHAT, running WHY, switched on by WHOM...?

I have been down there. I surfaced. I am not saying who. I am only asking.

HEARD (twice): the First Batch started all of this. VERDICT: ON RECORD. It is the game's own line, and the codex agrees.

HEARD (once, from you): somebody switched the machines on. VERDICT: not even a rumour yet; it has only been heard once. The codex says the First Batch was the first spill from the big machines on the wall, and that why the machines run is left unsaid on purpose. LEFT OPEN is not the same as MAYBE, and it is certainly not the same as "ask yourself".

What it started: US. And then more of us. And then the vats. And then MORE. (we do not know why the machines run either. we never asked. we were busy.)

VERDICT: the most honest post in the thread, from the only poster who was actually there. The mill files it under LEFT OPEN, beside the Slopwright's name, where it will stay until the codex says otherwise.
